Writer, activist and playwright Lorraine Hansberry would have been 79 today.
Her first play, A Raisin In the Sun, is based on her childhood experiences of desegregating a white neighborhood. It won the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award as Best Play of the Year.
She began coming out as a lesbian and “in August 1957, she wrote two letters to the fledgling lesbian periodical, The Ladder, in which she supported the emerging American lesbian liberation movement.
